Torrance City Council will be almost completely replaced by 2014 if Mayor candidate Pat Furey wins his bid for Mayor in 2014. Also councilmember Cliff Numark may be vacating his seat in November if he wins a seat on The El Camino Board. This would eliminate the only incumbent left, leaving 3 open seats to fill. And if this weren't enough, councilwoman Susan Rehlinger announced publicly that she will step down for an early retirement of her seat leaving yet another vacancy. Basically in 2014 we could have 5 out of 6 new councilmembers and a new mayor. Lot's of changes.

Who's running for Torrance city council? The question is.... who isn't? In the past couple of weeks we have had a surge of form 501 filings with the city clerk. Form 501 is basically your intent to run for office form. For now we have 11 people running for 3 seats. This number will most definetly change. I can imagine upwards of 20 candidates running since there may be a couple extra seats coming up. It is pretty clear that candidate Aurelio Mattucci has already hit the streets and met up with hundreds of business owners. Elections in Torrance are at large and there are no districts. Also, there is no run off election and this saves the tax payers of Torrance about $200,000 per election. Cities like Redondo Beach spend quite a bit on run off elections. They just had one for a handful of candidates.

I am a candidate for Torrance City Council. Running for office has been a long time dream of mine. I have never been more motivated in achieving this endeavor. I feel that in order to truly make positive changes in our city one must make them as a whole, work together and get involved at all levels. These are challenging times for us, as a country and as a city, with the redevelopment funds gon...e, we are facing the same fate as many other municipalities , loss of businesses that directly translate to less revenue for our city, loss of local jobs and more of our families losing their homes. Less revenue for the city means the potential loss of many programs, services and activities that have shaped Torrance throughout the years. It's not a matter of Right or Left, it's a matter of Right or Wrong. I will do what is Right for the people of Torrance. I will listen to your concerns and suggestions.
